Texas Senate Bill 6, signed in June 2025, requires large loads above 75 MW to curtail on ERCOT instruction during declared grid emergencies — and new large loads energizing after December 31, 2025 must install equipment enabling remote disconnection during firm load shed.

ERCOT also replaced its one-project-at-a-time study process with a system-wide batch process. Other markets are moving in the same direction.

The question is no longer whether your load will be interruptible. It's whether that interruption is engineered by you or imposed on you.

Why flexibility is the fastest route to power

Research from Duke University's Nicholas Institute found the grid could absorb roughly 100 GW of new flexible data center load with curtailment needed in fewer than 1% of annual hours across the 22 largest US balancing areas.

Read that again: the capacity exists. It is available to loads the system can lean on, and unavailable to loads it can't. A rigid load asks the utility to build for your worst hour. A flexible load asks it to accommodate your average one. Those are completely different requests, and they get completely different answers.

  • Storage-buffered curtailment

    Batteries sized and controlled so a grid curtailment event is absorbed by the asset, not by your compute. The utility sees load reduction; your racks see nothing.

  • On-site generation dispatch

    Turbines and generation configured to pick up load on instruction, turning a curtailment obligation into a capability you can commit to contractually.

  • Controls and telemetry

    The SCADA, controls, and communications layer the grid operator requires to actually count your flexibility — including remote disconnect capability where rules now mandate it.

  • Aggregated flexibility across a campus or portfolio

    Multiple assets and multiple sites coordinated as one dispatchable resource, so flexibility commitments are met at the portfolio level rather than the rack level.

  • Protection and coordination

    Relay settings and protection schemes engineered so fast transitions between grid and on-site power are safe, coordinated, and acceptable to the utility.

Flexibility isn't only a compliance cost. Committed, dispatchable capacity is a product the grid pays for, and it can support better interconnection terms, better tariff positions, and revenue from assets that would otherwise sit idle.

We engineer for the obligation first and the upside second — but the upside is real, and it belongs to the asset owner.

A load that can help the system is a load the system can accept.
